A modern twist on something old.

IDEAS ISSUE 006: PROJECT 3

This third project as part of our Colour-Make-Over in the Ideas Magazine has a lot of nostalgia for me. This little cupboard use to be my grandmother's, it is now the piece of furniture that will - throughout the year - get a new character and finish for each Ideas Magazine Issue.

For this first make-over, we decided to try making it look a little more modern or even a bit quirky to go with our - "Positive fresh start" theme (read the article on p.106 in the Ideas Magazine Jan/Feb issue.)

Before and After Ideas Magazine Issue 006 project 3

What you need:

  • Annie Sloan paint in the following colours:

  • For the pale yellow: Old White & Cream

  • For the Bougainvillea Pink: Emperor's Silk, English Yellow, Henrietta.

  • Masking Tape

  • Paint Brushes

  • Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax

STEP 1: Design

Make sure the surface you will be painting is clean, dry and oil free. Plan the design on your piece of furniture. We want to add a bit of colour blocking to this vintage piece of furniture to give it a more modern twist. Masking tape helps lay out your design.

Step 2 & 3: Painting and Waxing

If you are painting colours that are abutting each other (in other words, one colour imediately next to the other like a stripe etc.) take these steps:

  1. Pick one colour to paint first. Paint two layers.

  2. Wax it.

  3. Stick the masking tape down to get your clean line, then paint your second colour. This way the masking tape won't rip the paint off.

To get the perfect, hot, Bougainvillea pink we mixed Annie Sloan colours in the following ratio:

1 Part English Yellow

1 Part Henrietta

3 Parts Emperor's Silk

Colour mix for bougainvillea pink

After you have painted your beautiful Annie Sloan colours on your piece of furniture, and waxed it, you are done! It really is that simple!
